I am late on getting this done! My husband and I took our kids camping for the first time last week so we were gone on the 1st but am back now and finally have the house semi-back in order. We also took our dogs camping with us and I think they may have had more fun than the kids….
I have been really awful about keeping active lately excpet for podcast posts and I think that is reflected pretty heavily in my reading (spoiler alert: I read a lot of graphic novels this month).
Books I read in May
Knight’s Shadow & Saint’s Blood by Sebastien de Castell
Again, I have really fallen down on reviews so I got a review up for Knight’s Shadow but not Saint’s Blood. Honestly, this comes down to the fact that although I really enjoy them, I weirdly just don’t have that much to say about them. The character development is great and the stories are good but I just don’t really have anything else to add.
Orange Vol. 1 & 2
Picked this up because of Melanie’s review of the second volume and am very glad I did! I love reading manga but have trouble finding some that I really get into. This was definitely one of those.
Royal Assassin & Assassin’s Quest by Robin Hobb
We had a whole podcast episode devoted to The Farseer Trilogy. It was almost as good as I remembered. I’m just not sure how I made it through that last book….
The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang
Another fantastic book, an amazing debut. Ender’s Game in Fantasy China is basically what this is and that alone should sell just about everyone. We had the immense pleasure of being joined by Miss Kuang for an interview on our podcast and we had a great time with her so definitely check that out!
Master Assassins by Robert V.S. Redick
This one is pretty fantasy-tropey in a lot of ways but was still a great read. The relationship between the MC brothers was the biggest pull for me as they very obviously care about each other but also resent each other at the same time.
Saga Vol. 1-6
Finally, I finally got around to getting into the graphic novel series, Saga. I only have the last two books left to read and guys…it is pretty fantastic. Fair warning, it is explicit in just about every way possible but the story is just so deep and wonderfully put together.
Obviously I will be finishing Saga but I am also excited to get started on Jay Kristoff’s new series starting with LIFEL1K3! I am a few pages in already and it is starting off pretty good!
Also, as I have mentioned before, I am a huge fan of the game Sea of Thieves where I get to run around as a pirate for hours on end. Sailing the seas, digging for buried treasure, fighting off evil skeletons, and keeping a weather eye on the horizon for enemy ships! It put me in a serious mood to read some pirate adventure books and what better place to start than the original pirate adventure, Treasure Island?
I have also started reading Brief Cases by Jim Butcher. This is another short story collection in the Dresden Files universe. I am almost done with it and it has been good getting back to seeing Harry in different mini-adventures while we wait for Peace Talks to come out…
I received and ARC for The Queen of Crows by Myke Cole last month and desperately want to read it as The Armored Saint was so good!
I plan on finishing off the Greatcoat’s series this month as well with Tyrant’s Throne. While the third book was undoubtedly the best thus far, it was also a deviation from the main lot I felt like. I am looking forward to this final book bringing everything together for Falcio & Co.
I also received an e-ARC for The Traitor God by Cameron Johnston and I am really intrigued by this book so I definitely will be making room for it.
