I Am a Guilty Reader Tag

Hey all! I wasn’t actually tagged by anyone for this but it seemed like a lot of fun so I tagging myself!

Have you ever re-gifted a book you’ve been given?

Not that I can think of. Honestly, I have spent way more time on this question than I should because I am like re-living my entire history with books trying to think of a time that I re-gifted a book. I remember re-gifting other things but not books. I just have such a hard time separating myself from them!

Have you ever said you’ve read a book when you haven’t?

I don’t think I have ever outright claimed to read a book that I haven’t but there have been times that I didn’t finish a book and later claimed to have read it as though I read the whole thing. Not stuff that intentionally DNF’d, more like books that I just needed a little bit of a break from and intended to come back to soon but never did. Off the top of my head, I have done this with The Canterbury Tales and The Decameron.

Have you ever borrowed a book and not returned it?

Yes. There is a Stephen King book on my shelf right now that I borrowed from someone and have not returned. I am really not a fan of Stephen King but I was loaning out a few books to this person and I think as a thank you they brought the Stephen King book to me and told me that I had to read it…..and I just never did. I fail to feel bad about it though because of the books I loaned, one cover got ruined and the other one never came back to me. So. There.

Have you ever read a series out of order?

Yes, The Sword of Truth series. I was 14 when I read the first book, Wizard’s First Rule and this was way before Goodreads and I don’t think I even had internet at my house to look up release dates. So the dust jacket said something to the effect of “Look out for the next book in the series, Wizard’s Second Rule!”

Well….the name of book 2 is not Wizard’s Second Rule. It is Stone of Tears. So for a year or so whenever I was at a bookstore I would look for Wizard’s Second Rule, upset when I couldn’t find it.

Finally one day, I happened to see Temple of the Winds and it had the same author, same style artwork, and said it was part of the Sword of Truth series! Score! This must be the next book! 14 year old me apparently did not know to look inside the first few pages to see what was out in the series so far…

So yeah, I read book 1 then book 4, then went back and found 2 and 3 and progressed “normally” from there.

Have you ever spoiled a book for someone?

I don’t think so unless they specifically okay’d spoilers. For anyone that listens to the Book Geeks Uncompromised podcast, you will know that I did this to Greg just last week!

Have you ever doggy-eared a book?

**shudder** yes…. I used to do this to book but some reason I used to be really bad about doing this to manga. I have no idea why the distinction.

Have you ever told someone that you don’t own a book when you do?

Um…only if I am mistaken, I believe. I can’t think of a time that I have intentionally lied about this.

Have you ever told someone you haven’t read a book when you have?

Again, I really don’t think so. Not many of my “real life” friends are into reading so it doesn’t really come up much. I may sometimes neglect to mention that I read 50 Shades of Gray. But that’s not quite the same….is it?

Have you ever skipped a chapter in a section of a book?

Yeah. John Galt’s big speech in Atlas Shrugged. It is like 50 pages of monologue. Skipped!

I want to say I have done this a few times in re-reads to so I can get to my favorite parts faster. :)

Have you ever bad mouthed a book you actually liked?

So we are going to go back to Sword of Truth with this.

Over the past couple years, I have developed a complicated relationship with this series. The first half of it, I really do love. But after about book 6, the entire thing just goes waaaaaaaaaaaa…..**stops for breath**….aaaaaaaaaaaaay downhill. So I do rant about the series as a whole sometimes because I get so frustrated with later books even though I do truly like the earlier ones.
